Enlightenment, Naturalism and Nihilism in Ray Brassier’s Philosophy

In this article we explain the relationship between Enlightenment, naturalism and nihilism in Ray Brassier’s philosophy. This means clarifying the links between the disenchantment of nature effected by scientific rationality, the negation that the world manifests itself, as it is, to intuition and the affirmation that reality lacks essential meaningful purposes. In this sense, we develop the problems of the contemporary disenchantment of mind and history, the naturalistic concept of meaning, the critique of the myth of the given, the defense of realism and the genealogy of nihilism. To conclude, we define the function of philosophy with regard to the limits of this contemporary naturalism. In Brassier’s enlightened and naturalistic nihilism, it is shown that, from modernity to the present day, the image that human beings have erected of themselves has paradoxically broken down through the exercise of their own rationality.
