Abstract

The soundness of our argumentation may be impacted by the very uncertainty it is trying to decrease. In this paper, we shall see how the cooperative aspect of epideitic discourse is independent of the agreement or disagreement with respect to the premises and the conclusions, and that the consensual character favored by this kind of argumentation is has both advantages and disadvantages. We conclude that no kind of argumentation is automatically advantageous or disadvantageous and, therefore, no normative model of argumentation in situations of uncertainty is automatically adequate or inadequate.
