In this article, I return to an argumentative thread of Theodor W. Adorno: philosophy is essentially based on the awareness of the problem that it cannot be fully integrated into society. It does not follow from this that philosophy should no longer concern itself with political and social problems. However, the relationship between politics and society, on one hand, and philosophy, on the other, can only be critical. This is evident not only in the way Adorno's philosophy must be understood as social philosophy, but also in his concept of society as an "emphatic" concept. Yet, no defeatism derives from Adorno's thought. Supported by the concept of "interventions" (Eingriffe), Adorno explains that philosophy can have a political and social effect when it understands its practice as a constitutive contribution to the public sphere (Öffentlichkeit), understood above all as a space for critique.
