Abstract

This article examines Giorgio Agamben’s concept of the threshold in critical dialogue with Dominick LaCapra to resist the de-historicizing universalization of the concentration camp as a political paradigm. It first reconstructs Agamben’s account of the state of exception, bare life, and the Muselmann as a zone of indistinction between law and life. It then presents LaCapra’s objection to the risk of making “Auschwitz-everywhere,” conflating absence with loss, and aestheticizing testimonial silence. Bringing in multidirectional memory (Rothberg) and cultural memory (Assmann), the article advances a non-competitive memory politics that preserves Auschwitz’s historical singularity without neutralizing its critical force. Ultimately, it argues that historicizing the threshold requires distinguishing event from experience (working through and acting out), deactivating the sovereign capture of language, and sustaining an ethics of testimony that enables mourning, agency, and responsibility in the present.
