The notion of "procedural meaning" refers to a type of computational meaning that plays a role in the interpretative process. This concept has evolved to the point where some interpretations differ significantly from the original proposal. For this reason, we believe it is important to characterize the notion, provide an overview of its modifications, and highlight some problems that have arisen from it. This article presents an account of the theoretical background of the concept of "procedural meaning" to characterize how it enters discussions on meaning. Additionally, four major stages in its development are outlined, along with some defining features that emerge from these stages. Finally, theoretical and methodological issues stemming from the definitions of "procedural meaning" and its use in linguistic analysis are discussed.
