Abstract

In Justin Martyr (Justin the Roman), the concept of λόγος (Logos) is the most studied and that which makes the apologist well-known. Justin's Logos enters history as the first attempt to "Christianize" philosophy and explain nascent Christianity. However, the concept of wisdom (σοφία) also appears in the author's texts and has been practically ignored by the literature. In this work, we seek to identify the concept of σοφία in Justin, observing its developments and functioning in his work. This concept fulfills a mediation function between ancient philosophy and Christian theology—which was still being constructed in Justin's time—thus constituting a sort of "second Logos" in the author. With this study, we intend to open a new perspective for understanding Justin, based on the identification and analysis of his concept of σοφία.
