Abstract

This article analyzes Rousseau’s works on music, particularly the Letter on French Music. Considering the way
Theodor Adorno politically interprets music and the postulates of Rousseau’s own political philosophy, three forms are proposed through which Rousseau criticizes the culture of his time, and especially the French monarchy, through the critique of its music. These are: his critique of harmony over melody, the spectacle, genius, and the mathematization of music. The manner in which these negative assessments transcend the musical to the political
is of course clarified. Furthermore, it is proposed that the music Rousseau himself composed attempts to escape these patterns of alienation, and that one of his works even becomes a form of political stance against slavery in the colonies.
