Abstract

Since the origin of performance art, there has been a debate about whether it should be captured in audiovisual documents or maintained as a live act of an ephemeral nature. This article proposes that what is important in the position of performance as an event is not simply its disappearance, as is often reduced to the ideas of Peggy Phelan in her Ontology of Performance, but the notion of presence before others, since it is in presence, and not in photographic records, that one enters into contact with the other. Drawing on various concepts from Hannah Arendt's work, the notion of performance as an event is proposed, that is, that the particularity of this artistic manifestation lies in its insertion into the public sphere through aesthetic experiences witnessed by many, an irreplaceable aspect of its political nature.
